Côtes du RhoneOne of the larger towns of the Cotes du Rhone region is Avignon, a beautiful city that we made our base for the time we were there. Avignon, an ancient city, is know for it's amazingly intact walls. We walked the 5km's around the outside of the walls one day and were amazed at how intact it was.
Avignon is home to some really nice restaurants, but we really enjoyed the undercover market, with lots of fresh produce and very friendly stall holders that help as best they can to understand your basic French requests! There are also some of the most beautiful French villages within an easy drive of Avignon. The one we thought was the prettiest was Gordes and the one wine village that we were most excited to visit was Chateaunuef-du-Pape. Chateaunuef-du-Pape was a great thrill to visit and quite a pretty town in itself. The ruin of the Chateau des Papes on the hill above the town makes it quite recognisable from a distance and is an interesting place to visit up close. The town has lots of caves to visit that showcase the many producers of the region. It was great fun and we would highly recommend a visit if you get the chance
